Research visiting, grup de recerca AIEM

May 06, 2024

On April 30, a research visiting was carried out coordinated by the research group AIEM, under the title Urban heavens in Vulnerable neighborhoods.

Dr. Agnese Salvati and Dr. Helena Coch, professors of the department, were in charge of the scientific coordination of the seminar.

Two guests participated in the seminar.

Dr. Emanuela Giancola gave the first talk, entitled: Comprehensive strategy to model exterior thermal comfort and energy demand in urban areas. URBANthercom Project.

It dealt with the importance of understanding the interactions between urban environments, energy demand and citizen well-being, in order to be able to mitigate and adapt cities to the phenomenon known as Urban Heat Island. There are significant interactions between the outer envelope of buildings, their energy consumption and the outer microclimate, but current building energy simulation tools have limitations. It presented its approach to generating weather files modified by the UHI effect.

Dr. Carolina Ganem gave the second talk entitled: The green in the city and its relationship with the thermal-energetic waste of the architectural spaces.

It dealt with urban designs that incorporate vegetation into streets, courtyards and spaces and control solar radiation through natural shade. Correctly articulated with other passive strategies generate under the treetop a moderate microclimate that favors the thermal-energy performance of architectural spaces, improving the perception of comfort of the inhabitants and the quality of life in cities.
