Pilar Garcia-Almirall, re-elected director of the Department of Architectural Technology

On 7 July, professor and researcher Pilar Garcia-Almirall began her second term as director of the UPC’s Department of Architectural Technology, after being re-elected to the post.

Professor Pilar Garcia-Almirall renews her position at the head of the Departament de Tecnologia de l’Arquitectura of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC), which she has been leading since 2017. Narcís Monturiol Medal in 2020 for the contributions made during his career and Extraordinary Award by the UPC to the Escola Tècnica Superior d’Arquitectura de Barcelona (ETSAB), Pilar Garcia-Almirall also directs the Virtual Innovation Modeling the Architecture and the City Lab (VIMAC). This city modeling laboratory, linked to the ETSAB, promotes the creation of new technologies in the teaching and research of architecture. During the period 2006-2011, Garcia-Almirall was also deputy director of the Barcelona School of Architecture.

Doctor in Architecture, her research, of a transdisciplinary nature, has provided new methods and procedures to systematize descriptive attributes of the building, the evaluation of the quality of the buildings and the social and urban conditions of the houses, in addition to the associated problems. in vulnerable neighborhoods. He has led innovative research in the evaluation of architectural, urban and environmental spaces, housing and neighborhood improvement. She has been a pioneer in the incorporation of computer technologies such as the geographic information system (GIS) in the study, evaluation and management of the city.

Director of the professional master’s degree in Geographic Information Systems at the UPC, she has also been awarded several prizes, such as the ‘La Caixa’ Welfare Projects Award for Doctoral Thesis. I

In addition, as a researcher, she is attached to the management of the Centre de Política del Sòl i Valoracions (CPSV), as well as a member of the research group on Qualitat de la Vida Urbana i Sostenibilitat, recognized by the Generalitat de Catalunya. Institutionally, she has participated in various advisory organs and is the representative of the Consell Social de la UPC al Consell de l'Habitatge Social de Barcelona.
