Article in EL PAÍS about the urban heat island effect cites the Urban-CLIMPLAN project of the CPSV

The article of the newspaper EL PAÍS Torrid Nights. The heat island effect makes summer in some cities more fearsome than winter, talk about the Urban Heat Island phenomenon, and mentions some of the data collected and results obtained in the Urban-CLIMPLAN project, The Urban Heat Island: effects on climate change and modelling for urban and territorial planning strategies. Application to the Metropolitan Region of Barcelona, BIA2015-68623-R (MINECO/FEDER), developed between 2016 and 2019 from the CPSV.

The main researcher of the project was professor Josep Roca Cladera and the researchers from the CPSV Blanca Arellano Ramos and Rolando Biere Arenas, as well as professors from other departments of the UPC and from other Spanish and foreign universities, participated.

From the results of the project, the article indicates, among other, that in the warmest neighbourhoods of Barcelona “more than a hundred tropical nights have been counted this summer,” those in which the minimum temperature has not dropped below 20 degrees. And, it also highlights that “the number of torrid nights grows alarmingly, with lows above 25 degrees.”
